Merida Yucatan
Colonial Mérida is a city full of charm.
The "Monument To The Flag" found on Paseo Montejo
Mérida is the capital of the state of Yucatán in Mexico and is the largest city in the Yucatán Peninsula with a population of over 750,000 people.
Mérida is a city of contrasts; in the northern side of the city you will find classy hotels, restaurants and shopping malls. Downtown Merida offers hotels and restaurants catering to every budget and taste. In the main plaza you will find a large market with small shops surrounding it where just about everything is sold.
The Main Square – Mérida’s Zocalo
Mérida is a hive of cultural life which also reflects its diversity. There are often free concerts, performances and various other events held in the plazas around Merida.
Founded by the Spanish Conquistadors in the 1540s Mérida was built on an old Maya city called T’ho. The palatial family home of the Conquistador leader Montejo can still be seen today on the south side of the Zócalo or main plaza. Scattered around the old town part of the city you will see signs of ancient Maya stonework that was reused in Spanish Colonial era buildings.
From the late 1800s to the mid-1920s Mérida prospered hugely, fueled by the production of henequen and sisal which made Yucatán the biggest rope maker in the world. Advancing Mérida had electric trams and street lights even before Mexico City. A sign of Mérida’s wealth was epitomized by the construction of the grand Pasejo Montejo avenue north of the old town, inspired by the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
With the introduction of artificial twines the sisal boom was over, and Mérida returned to a sleepy provincial capital again until development picked back up in the late 20th century.
Merida Culture
The city’s flavor is colonial and the climate is tropical. The daytime temperature varies; in January, it is usually around 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 Celsius) and in June, about 95 F (35 C). To avoid the heat, most people are busiest in the mornings, after lunch it’s time for a siesta then back to work for a few hours in the late afternoon. The welcome cool breezes from the Gulf of Mexico drift into Mérida in the evenings making it a perfect time for socialising. You can see them visiting and talking as they stroll along the streets, sit in the plazas or dine in the many sidewalk restaurants.
From Mérida, it is easy to take day trips to many of the archaeological sites, ecological parks, typical villages, caves, beaches, colonial missions and more. Adopt the laid back style of the locals and take your time to discover the Maya site, stroll along the Gulf of Mexico’s beaches, visit a village festival, photograph the wildlife, go on a cave adventure or swim in a cenote… There’s so much to see and do.
