Golf in The Yucatan Peninsula

A round of golf in the Yucatan is golfing paradise.

Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club

Its courses are as beautiful and varied as they are challenging with stunning ocean views, jungle lined fairways teaming with wildlife, Mayan ruins,  and best of all sparkling, sunny skies. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner you will love playing golf in the Yucatan.

I have had the pleasure of playing most of the courses here and can honestly say I have enjoyed them all, the quality of my golf not always being the number one reason. I will be  updating this site regularly to reflect any changes good or bad to the courses, management and costs.

Playa Mujeres

Here you can find all the course information you need before you get here, along with my latest reviews. Hopefully you will be drinking that cold beer at the 19th hole reflecting over a fantastic birdie or two. Positive thinking!

Club de Golf Playa Palmas is located in the northern part of the Isla del Carmen beachfront, consisting of 9 holes with sand traps and water, surrounded by lush pine trees and coconut palms that give if that tropical touch.

I haven’t played this course as of yet but this is what the club had to say…”Next to the shore 9 hole golf course with 6238yds. from the back tees with water in 8 of the 9 holes, Bermuda grass greens and Bermuda and local kikuyu on the rest of it. A short course where the biggest challenge is the wind and narrow fairways, besides its challenging par 3´s where you can have fun and taste a bite of the Caribbean ocean next to you. Also a place where you can enjoy a good meal and good drinks in our new restaurant right between the 9th green and the ocean, a place you must visit in Campeche.

El Tinto Golf Course at Cancun Country Club

Located just minutes from Cancuns Hotel Zone and 25 minutes from Playa Del Carmen this is the first PGA TPC-branded golf complex outside the USA. This 36-hole planned facility is part of the Cancun Country Club residential development. The first 18 holes is a championship course designed by Nick Price and opened in May 2012 to much hype. The second 18 holes, a championship course designed by Tom Fazio is still under construction. The facility also includes a state of the art 125,000 square feet clubhouse with a quality food and beverage operation. In addition to the residential development, other facilities will include a boutique hotel, beach club, and high-end retail centre.

“Through a close relationship to the PGA Tour, El Tinto Golf Course plays host to several events throughout the golf calendar. Whether hosting an event or not, the principles of excellence remain the same at El Tinto Golf Course.
As our guest, you will walk fairways created to host a PGA Tour event, where one day a chapter of golf history may be written.” – El Tinto Golf Course

My Review: I played the TPC Cancun in May 2014, at that time it was in  very poor condition with  a lot of construction work being carried out. The structure and design of the course is good with some nice lakes and well crafted holes but in my opinion opened it’s doors a little too early as the course was not ready, that said this course clearly has the potential to be one of if not the  best course in Cancun. I understand the new clubhouse is now open but sadly reports are that the condition of the course is still lacking the quality expected of a TPC. Further more there seems to be some internal management dispute with TPC releasing this statement in Sept 2014. I will be revisiting the course this year (2015) to re evaluate and will post an update here. My advice if you are considering playing here is to check the latest reviews on trip advisor and get in touch with the club before parting with any money.

The Riviera Maya Golf Club

The Riviera Maya Golf Club is located 62 miles south of Cancun International Airport. Designed by top architect Robert Trent Jones ll this golfing complex spans approximately 720 acres of the lush Mayan Riviera and incorporates a Championship 18 hole Par 72 course plus an executive 9 hole Par 3 golf course.
rivieramaya-golfclubThe course was carved out through part of a limestone quarry and the fairways spread out into dense jungle. Wildlife is abundant and the natural surroundings are impressive, playing at the Riviera Maya Golf Club will be remembered as a great environmental experience by any golfer.
Before your round begins you can warm up at the impressive practice area which has two driving range The Riviera Maya Golf Clubtees, a chipping area with a bunker and a great putting green.

Robert Trent Jones loves fairway bunkers, so practice your long bunker shots before coming. There are several spectacular water holes and one hole with a cenote just left of the green. The Par 3 15th is a very challenging 190 yard carry over water, The Riviera Maya Golf Clubanywhere short or right of the green is wet and anything left is in the rocks and jungle. Then you’re on to the stunning 16th, a 550 yard par 5 with water all down the left.

Riviera Maya Golf Club is a luxury golf resort, which is part of the Gran Bahia Príncipe Riviera Maya Resort; a five-star hotel complex formed by 3 Bahia Principe Sin Kaanhotels, and right next to the golf course. Within the Residential Project and just 200 meters from the Club House, you will find a five-star and Don Pablo Collection hotel, which is the Bahia Principe Sin Kaan.

I paid $120.00 to play here with a 7.30am tee time and that included the cart, but having spoken to other players in the bar it appears this course doesn’t have a one price fits all policy and it may well be worth calling or emailing ahead for prices, I would also suggest asking at your hotel as they may be able to broker you a deal. Make sure to get the all inclusive price including carts before turning up.
